Feb 2003: The 147 was the most powerful of the early Cub Cadets and the last narrow-frame model introduced by IH. It is one of the more sought after Cub Cadets. This 147 was
found about one hours drive from home. The tractor was complete but in rough shape.
Almost all the electrics are shot, the engine looks tired, there’s dirt/grease/rust everywhere, and I’ve found a couple (empty) mouse nests. IF the Engine & Hydro aren’t too far gone, this can be a relatively cost-effective restoration. If not, it could get ugly. With the end result in mind, I think this tractor can replace my trusted Gravely. That means mowing, snowblowing several driveways, and monthly mowing trips to Arunah Hill.
March 2003: Disassembly stopped at the bare frame.
At more than one point along the way, I looked at the pile of dirty & rusted parts wondering what I could have been thinking.....
April 2003: The Engine is at a Machine Shop.
All of the large body pieces have been sandblasted and primed. Almost all of the grime, rust and old paint have been removed. There’s shiny new Federal Yellow all over the garage. Parts are coming in, money is going out.
May 2003: The engine has been started and sounds good.
Final chassis work is near completion. For various reasons, most of the month passed before the tractor was fully assembled (see Restoration home page).
I should note that I’ve been fixing a few things on the 125 which has taken time from the 147 restoration.
June 2003: The 147 has sat for a couple weeks while I dealt with business matters and took some family vacation time. The 125 has required more work as well. Parts for the
147’s have arrived and final assembly will begin in mid-month. Tweaks to the engine and speed controls are still needed and getting the hood to sit straight has proven to be an elusive quest.
